Naviance

Career planning is an ongoing process that allows you to rethink and reevaluate yourself and your career options as you have experiences, and as you grow and develop.

During high school, you should get to know yourself. Now is the time to learn about who you are, what you are good at and begin to explore career options. The Tam District offers the Naviance Program to help with this process. Sophomore year is the perfect time to complete the online Naviance “Do What You Are” and “Career Interest Profiler”. These tools can help you discover the types of work activities and careers that match your interests.

Naviance also offers an excellent college search feature and allows you to save colleges that you are interested in.  You can create a resume on Naviance, explore Road Trip Nation to watch short clips on various careers, or complete several other assessments. The Tamiscal Naviance page has links to the Tamiscal website, the CA Community Colleges, the CSU website and the UC website.

College of Marin (COM)

College Credit Program (CCP)

While taking classes at College of Marin:

  • College of Marin has been covering the enrollment/fees for concurrently enrolled high school students taking up to 11 units during the 2018 -19 school year. Otherwise the cost for taking a class at College of Marin is $46 per unit fee (a typical 3 unit course would cost $138) in addition to other semester fees that total about $50.
  • An approved CCP form is required for all classes taken by high school students.
  • College classes require two or three hours of study for every hour of class.
  • Regular attendance is crucial.
  • Introduce yourself to the instructor. Let him/her know you are a high school student participating in the College Credit Program.
  • Ask your instructor for a schedule of their office hours. You may need assistance with your assignments.
  • Remember – The grade you earn in every college class becomes part of your permanent college record. It will follow you to every college you subsequently attend.
  • If for some reason you are unable to complete your class, don’t forget to file an official drop card with the College’s Office of Admissions. Check the calendar in the front of the Credit Class Schedule for deadlines. If you stop attending without filing an official drop, you will probably receive an “F” grade.
  • Grades are not mailed. They are available both at mid-term and end of the semester on your COM portal.

The College of Marin counselors are available to help you understand how COM courses transfer to UC, CSU, and private schools. Please call (415) 485-9432 to make an appointment.

Instructions on how to sign up can be found at:

http://es.marin.edu/admissions/ccp-concurrent-enrollment

Complete the CCP form on the COM site to get approval for the class.  You must go back in and register after clearance.

Private and Out of State Colleges

It is your responsibility to check individual college admission standards. Over 750 schools participate in the Common Application.  www.commonapp.org.  For other schools, applications may be directly linked to their websites.

College Fairs

  • Before the fair, get your barcode in advance to request Information from colleges the easy way. Pre-register your contact information at https://www.wacac.org/college-fairs/wacac-fairs/
  • Bring your custom bar code printout to the fair so colleges you like can scan it and send you more information. Without the bar code, you will need to fill out individual information cards by hand in order to receive information.

Before the fair, answer the following questions to help determine what kind of school best suits you:

  • Do you want to attend a two or four-year institution? Co-ed or single-sex?
  • What size school do you want to attend? What programs of study are you considering?
  • How far from home do you want to go? Urban, suburban, or rural environment?

At the Fair

  • At National Fairs, please pick up a bag and a fair directory. At WACAC College Fairs, please walk around (the colleges will be placed in alphabetical order.)
  • Visit with colleges and universities that you feel meet your criteria.
  • At WACAC and National Fairs, please talk with a college counselor at the Counseling Center if you have any questions or need help with your college search.
